Mzansi theatre actors will be showing some of world-acclaimed novelist and writer, Franz Kafka’s best work on stage.

Talented performers such as Ameera Patel, Tony Miyambo, Antony Coleman, Sue-Pam Grant, Kevin Smith, Michael Mazibuko and Dan Selsick will all be starring in A Kafka Moment.

This is a mini-season of plays that will show on Thursday and Friday, 22 and 23 April, at the Centre For The Less Good Idea in Maboneng, Joburg.

Speaking to SunBuzz, one of the actors Tony said the plays are adapted from a few of Kafka’s books.

A Kafka Moment is adapted from the Kafka’s Ape, A Hunger Artist Hunger, A Common Confusion and The Cares of a Family Man. A group of friends attempt to puzzle out the life and writings of Franz Kafka through short, playful sketches,” he said.

“This is selected work that the centre has been involved in for about two years now.

“All the work is either interpretations or direct text from Franz Kafka’s work.”

Tony said he’s been doing these plays for a number of years now and has travelled the world with these plays.

“I have been doing a play called Kafka’s Ape for years now. We’ve travelled all over the world and we were supposed to be in Canada this year but we couldn’t because of Covid-19.

“The University of Toronto advised us to do the show online instead.

“Fortunately though, the Centre For The Less Good Idea, came through for us,” said Tony.

“They said they also do Kafka’s work and suggested we come together and do one show together.

“So we’ll be performing live for South African audiences in theatre and the show will also be streamed in Canada, America and Europe.”

Tony said people should expect excellent acting.

“Firstly, we took precautionary steps for Covid-19. There will be social distancing.

“Over and above that, there will be a rich exploration of Franz Kafka’s incredible writing by incredible South African writers and performers, especially at a time where Kafka’s writing has become more palpable.”
