PIANIST and composer Sibusiso Mashiloane is scheduled to perform in Cape Town on International Jazz Day, April 30.

The Durban-based muso, who is also a conductor and virtuoso player, has drawn attention with his live performances.

He said: “Performing in Cape Town is always very special to me since it’s a city that played a significant role in affording our SA heroes a platform to perform during the apartheid era,” he said.

Sibusiso’s performance will consist of an acclaimed Cape Town-based band with Shaun Johannes on double bass, Bololo Nkoane on drums, Nono Nkoane on vocals while Buddy will be on the saxophone and flute.

“Playing with this band will be very helpful since they are very experienced in my exploration of sound and, of course, Shaun and Buddy played with my heroes such as Moses Molelekwa, Zim Ngqawana and Winston Mankunku Ngozi”.

The jazz muso has to date released five albums that have performed well. He won many accolades and has been nominated for various awards, such as the Samas, Afrima and the international Urban Music Awards. He is currently studying towards a PhD.

He said through his music, he aimed to erase the West’s influence on Africa and showcase an African identity.

“I have an aspirational view in raising awareness about the value of our works as Africans and I aim to be one of the influences in a new generation of musicians, music collectors and live music audiences who will pride themselves on their African heritage,” he said.

The event takes place on Friday, 30 April at Alliance Francaise du Cap on 155 Loop Street in Cape Town.

The show starts at 7.30pm.

Booking essential – R120 general / R60 students.
