DURING their long career, Ladysmith Black Mambazo has won five Grammy Awards and become world famous.

On Saturday night, the group celebrated yet another milestone – their 60th anniversary.

During the celebration at Pietermaritzburg City Hall, KZN they launched three new scathamiya groups.

They discovered the groups through a mobile academy which they started last year.

Group leader Sibongiseni Shabalala told Daily Sun they had made it internationally, thanks to Mzansi people’s support.

“To celebrate 60 years while we’re still going strong is a big thing for us, and it needs to be celebrated with fans,” he said.

“We’re happy that, as we celebrate 60 years, we’re also unveiling new scathamiya groups to fill our shoes.”

Shabalala said the group had always stayed true to their roots, and that was why they wanted to continue supporting and celebrating scathamiya.

He said they also wanted to put to rest the idea that the music genre was targeted at an older male audience.

“My father Joseph formed Black Mambazo in 1960 when he was only 20, and the others were younger than him.

“That shows scathamiya is for everyone, and we’re happy we discovered young groups.

“There will be a series of events and activities as part of our celebrations.”

The three new groups are called Inkunzemnyama, Umzamo Young Boys and Good News, each of which recorded a debut album with the help of Black Mambazo.

Inkunzemnyama leader Celimpilo Hadebe (31) said they started their group in 2009 but were only able to record last year.

“We’re honoured to have been discovered by them as we look up to them.”

Umzamo leader Mvuselelo Mthembu (20) said they started their group in 2017 and won’t disappoint Black Mambazo.
