SHE came from the dusty streets of Bronkhorstspruit, studied at university and then unapologetically stormed into the male-dominated world of DJ’ing.

Now DJ DeNtha, whose real name is Nthabiseng Monageng, will be celebrated worldwide. This after being one of eight DJs to come out tops in the international DJ Mixtape Competition held last month.

The competition is dedicated to up-and-coming as well as established DJs from around the world. DJs send a link to their mixtape and ultimately, the world’s best DJs will be unearthed from the crop.

“My mix is one-hour long and it’s filled with soothing soulful House tracks from rich South African vocalists,” said DeNtha.

“People can expect deep dance tracks that will uplift their spirits. The mix has songs that speak to the soul because that’s what I represent – music that brings joy in people’s lives.”

DeNtha was selected alongside seven other internationally-recognised DJs.

She has won an all-paid DJ course with Ableton Live, which she said will go a long way in enhancing her DJ’ing career.

“This is a proud moment for me as I am able to represent South Africa and all the female DJs. The platform we get from the competition alone opens international opportunities not just for gigs, but also growth and collaborations,” she said.

The contest receives truckloads of mixes every month. In August alone, they received mixes from the United States, United Kingdom and Irish based DJs. These include the likes of DJ Billa from Philadelphia in the US, who has been spinning vinyls for over 25 years now.

In August, Sk De DJ from Botswana made the cut with a down tempo house mix featuring tracks from around the world.

DJ DeNtha made the cut alongside Yugen Sill, originally form the UK.

DJ DeNtha is also an author. Her book, titled Music Saved Me, was published earlier this year. She battled depression and a series of abusive relationships, but it was her love of music that helped her beat all the odds.

She has also started DJ classes as well as a mobile sound business.
