Actress, philanthropist and new mom Gabisile Tshabalala reveals that she suffered from  postpartum depression shortly after giving birth to her new born baby this year.

The 30 years old mother of five children, explained her parenting challenges coupled with being a working mother during this global pandemic heightened her condition.

“Lockdown was quite challenging because I had just given birth. I actually went through what you call post partum depression and that has never happened to me. So it was my first time experiencing such and with the help of my grandmother I managed to heal,” she said.

Post partum depressions is a mental issue which include symptoms such as insomnia, loss of appetite, intense irritability and difficulty bonding with the baby.

Her baby was born on May 1, 2020.

She also revealed that parenting five children, two being her biological children and three (3) which she adopted and from the 3 that she adopted, one is mentally challenged, has been no easy adjustment.

Tshabalala explained that motherhood meant “ love, unconditional love and patience” and added that it she  would have not come out of the mental phase without the assistance of her helper and grandmother.

“ I think I have a very good support system. I have got my helper who plays a huge role in helping me and whenever I am feeling down, she is there to be the second mom. It was a bit challenging but because I had my helper, my grandmother and my mom to call whenever I was feeling down,” she said.

She added that her strength and wisdom came from engaging with her elderly women her life.

“I learnt a lot from my mother and from my grandmother as well and I see how patient my helper is. These three women play a very big role in my parenting and also definitely from the word of God. I feed myself with that every single day,” she said.

It comes as no surprise to her for becoming a mother of five as she believed that she would take on the role with ease.

“So, theres a funny story behind this actually. Back in high school I used to say I am going to have 7 children and I will adopt 2 or 3 and yeah that’s how my life is going to be. And then, at the age of 24 then I got 3 children. So I guess God was listening,” she laughed.

Tshabalala  is known for her role as Gontse on Scanda! and presenter of Moja Love Channel TMI.
