FORMER Ukhozi FM radio host Ngizwe Mchunu will spend the next seven days in jail after his bail bid was rejected.

Mchunu made a brief appearance in the Randburg Magistrates Court on Wednesday, 21 July, after he handed himself to the police in KZN two days ago.

The state told the magistrate they were going to oppose bail and listed various reasons for this.

State prosecutor Yusuf Baba said the accused was a flight risk. He told the court Mchunu, who apparently is unemployed, fled Gauteng to KZN with a private jet and later released a video saying he had to go in hiding because he was sought by police.

However, the defence said they were of the view that their client should be released on bail due to the charge being a schedule one offence.

The defence also argued Mchunu doesn’t have any influence in society and accused the state of making their client appear more famous what he actually is.

Magistrate Hleziphi Mkhasibe said she wouldn’t grant Mchunu bail and would allow the state to bring evidence that will back their flight risk claims.

She said this was not an ordinarily schedule offence and there was a likelihood that more charges could be added.

She postponed the matter to 28 July for Mchunu to formally apply for bail.
