DURBAN Gen actress Nombulelo Mhlongo is grateful for her character, Sne.

She said: “Sne is a typical slay queen who is not afraid to wear short and revealing clothes.

“What we’ve learnt is she can do anything to get money even if it means scamming other people. We’ve also learnt she is like that because of her past.

“For example, in her past life she had to act and dress like this in order to lure men. Her storyline is interesting in that she is a reflection of many women in our society.”

Nombulelo said playing Sne has helped her deal with her own fears.

“Before I played this character, I wouldn’t wear revealing clothes.

“This was due to my strict background. Also, because of my body I was fearful of being judged by society. As a result I always covered my body. To a certain point I was negatively judging and questioning myself,” she said.

But Sne has challenged her to face her own demons.

“I am therefore grateful for this character, because now I can wear anything without fear of being criticised.”

As an established actress, she said she had her own fears.

“When I took up this role, I did a lot of soul searching, trying to see if my own values were aligned with Sne.

“The truth is, I’m nothing like Sne. My past is nothing like hers. Her values are similar but different to mine,” she said.

“We are alike in the sense that Sne would fight for what she wants. I am like that, I don’t stop fighting until I get what I want.

“But I wouldn’t go out of my way to hurt other people just to get what I want.”

Nombulelo’s hope is women and society would learn from her character.

“I believe there’s a lot to learn from Sne. She is not all bad and as society, we can embrace her confidence and use her shortcomings to deal with our own fears,” she said.
