YFM duo, Nia Brown and Mthaux, are ready to change the face of radio.
The pair that hosts the noon to 3pm show, The Shakedown With Nia Brown and Mthaux on weekdays, said they have big plans for their show this year.
Speaking to SunBuzz, the vibrant radio hosts said they have upped their game.
Mthaux, whose real name is Mthokozisi Mncwango, said: “When it comes to radio, everyone needs to step up their game. So what we have planned this year are things that the audience has never heard before.
“We’re going to change the face of radio. I mean, we already are changing it but we’ll do it more intensely this year. YFM gives us creative freedom and that’s the thing we appreciate the most with working at the station. They let us push the boundaries, creatively,” said Nia.
The hosts said they treated their show more than just a radio show.
Nia said: “We like calling our show reality radio. A lot of the time, Mthaux and I will get on the radio and we talk about our daily experiences and things we go through. Also, we have a good relationship with our listeners. We put it in a way that we’re just friends hanging out, than making it a radio show.”
She said they’re outspoken, aren’t afraid of anyone and always voice their opinions.
“We’re very creative with our content. We’ve done some very wild things on our show. We’ve called our exes, asking for love back as well as mocked awards and other stations. That’s the thing with us. We take creativity to a whole other level and that’s what makes us unique,” she said.
Speaking about his goals for radio, Mthaux said he’d like to see more of queer people in different mediums and positions.
“As a queer man, who’s proudly queer, I think representation is very important.
“By joining radio, I wanted to be myself and hear myself on radio as a representative of queer people. I’ll be happy with representation once I see queer people in management positions as well as on radio and TV,” he said.
Nia said her goal this year was to go back to acting.
“I’ve thought about other plans outside of radio, but I think radio is the one thing that’ll always be a constant in my life. But my personal goal of the year is to go back to acting. I’m tired of letting acting take the back seat. Hopefully people can see me on their screens soon.”
Both the presenters said they would love to try TV presenting in the near future.
