BIG Zulu has looked back to the old days when he was still trying to make it big in hip-hop.
The Mali Eningi rapper posted an old photo of himself in a taxi and said he used it to go to hip-hop sessions. However, people didn’t like his style and told him he was ruining hip-hop with his taxi, the way he dressed and what he rapped about.
Said the rapper: “I’ve come a long way. I used to rap at the taxi rank, going to hip-hop sessions with a Siyaya and it all came from a place of love.”
He said even record labels didn’t want to sign him unless he sang about money, cars, women and champagne.

“I rapped in Zulu, wearing Zulu traditional wear and Brentwood. I used to get insults, people saying I am ruining hip-hop. There’s no insult I haven’t been called with. Record labels didn’t want to push me, saying where have I ever seen a rapper who wears Brentwood, Carvela and traditional clothes?”
But he said he didn’t let that bring him down and now he’s Mzansi’s biggest hip-hop star. He won seven awards for Song of The Year, Best Digital Sales, Best Album, Best Video, Best Male, Best Collabo and Ubuntu Activism in South African Music Awards.
“Today, I have a record label, Nkabi Records. Today I’m the Carvela ambassador. Today I’m the biggest artist in the country. Today I made history and got seven hip hop awards in one night. All I’m saying is, don’t give up,” he said.
