FORMER president of the US Barack Obama is in mourning.

This comes after the death of his grandmother, Sarah Ogwel Onyango Obama (99).

She passed away at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kisumu, Kenya.

The former head of state took to social media to share the sad news.

In a brief post, Barack said: “My family and I are mourning the loss of our beloved grandmother, Sarah Ogwel Onyango Obama, affectionately known to many as “Mama Sarah” but known to us as “Dani” or Granny. We will miss her dearly, but we’ll celebrate with gratitude her long and remarkable life.”

The news of her passing was also confirmed by her daughter, Marsat Onyango, to AFP on Monday.

“It is true she has gone to be with the Lord. She passed on this morning,” she said.

Born in 1922, Barack’s grandmother was the third wife of Hussein Onyango Obama, President Obama’s grandfather, a herbalist and a village elder who fought for the British in Burma, now called Myanmar.

She became a celebrity in her own right after Barack visited Kenya in 2006, two years before he was elected to his first White House term and while he was still a US senator for Illinois.
