UP-AND-COMING radio DJ Athenkosi Baliso’s dream is to be on one of Mzansi’s biggest radio stations.
Baliso, as he’s affectionately known, hosts the weekdays breakfast show on Durban Youth Radio FM. He told SunBuzz he has a lot to offer the industry.
The 23-year old DJ from East London in Eastern Cape hopes to work for his favourite radio station, 5FM.
The Durban University journalism graduate said making it to the top 10 of the Tru FM talent search competition in February inspired him.
“I have been in broadcasting since 2017 and I have learnt many things.
“My experience permits me to join the biggest radio station, 5 FM. It’s in my heart because I like their style of broadcasting and the music they play.”
Baliso said he’s started to send the station his CV and demos to show he’s interested in working for them.

“If 5FM can offer me a job, I can do any show but I love doing breakfast shows and giving people hope in the mornings to start the new day.
“I look up to experienced radio DJs Thando Thabethe and Unathi Nkayi, who do their jobs in the way I like.”
Baliso started his presenting career on Kumkani community radio station in 2017. In 2018 he joined online station Urban Indian, hosting Saturday afternoon shows.
“I had to leave as I didn’t resonate with the sound of the station. The same year I joined campus radio DUT, hosting breakfast shows while juggling classes. I had to bunk morning classes most of the time.”
That year Baliso joined Durban Youth Radio as a news anchor.
“I started standing in on Friday party music shows, then on weekend lunchtime shows. I was given an opportunity to host weekday midmorning shows and then to fill in on weekday breakfast shows.”
