The Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation has taken a step to help up-and-coming musicians.
The department, together with Infinite View Management, launched an initiative to help emerging artists digitise their music for free.
According to Arts and Culture MEC Mbali Hlophe, this is in response to how Covid-19 affected the creative sector.
She told Daily Sun: “With lockdown forcing events to close, a lot of people started to consume the arts and music digitally and the idea came about to help less fortunate artists digitise their music.
“We also teach them how to upload their music digitally on their own, so they can do it themselves in the future and collect royalties.”
Fifty musicians who have pre-recorded, mastered and mixed music will be chosen.

But they will not only get their music digitised.
“The musicians will get 100% of their royalties and will attend a masterclass for musicians.
“We also identified local radio stations that can sample music and a market drive for the new digital platform.”
She said the initiative won’t only nurture young artists. They’ll also benefit from it.
“The aim is to develop and nurture young artistic talent in Gauteng to ensure a smooth migration into the fourth industrial revolution, and workshopping new talent to ensure there is a pool of talented people and a new revenue stream,” Hlophe said.
Applications close on Friday, 5 March and only musicians from Joburg, Tshwane, West Rand, Sedibeng and Ekurhuleni qualify.
