They may be gone but their memories will linger on for a very long time to come.
Music legends Hugh Masekela, Busi Mhlongo, Brenda Fassie, Mirriam Makeba, Ray Phiri and Jabu Khanyile left Mzansi so much the poorer when they left this world in different times over the years.
But they also left proud legacies behind them.
It is these legacies that will be celebrated when Drakensberg Promotions stages another annual edition of the Moretele Park Tribute Concert in Tshwane on 31 August.
In paying tribute to these music icons, a select band will take the revellers down memory lane through a medley of some of their biggest songs.
“This is what the tribute concert is all about,” said Drakensberg Promotions director and organiser, Sam Mhangwani.
The festival will also mark the 25th anniversary of South Africa’s democracy. Some of the musicians who will be performing on the day include Caphius Semenya, Thandiswa Mazwai, Simphiwe Dana, Mi Casa, Mango Groove and Malaika.
Speaking in an interview with SunBuzz earlier this week, Bra Sam, as Mhangwani is popularly known, said the concert had grown in leaps and bounds over the past two decades.
“We showcase 100% Mzansi talent. This proves people love and enjoy their artists. This is one thing we have been doing successfully,” he said.
“When I see this growth it makes me happy. We will continue to pay tribute to our late legends and give new artists a platform they deserve,” he said.
Bra Sam said people must get genuine tickets at Computicket as early as possible to avoid any disappointment.
“Safety has always been our concern,” he said.
“This year we’ll again ensure that our music lovers are safe at all times.”
- The concert starts at noon and tickets are available at Computicket for R300
