FIVE people have tragically died in a gruesome accident earlier today (Sunday).

This is after a delivery van overturned and the five people died on the scene.

The KZN Emergency Medical Services spokesman Robert McKenzie said the serious crash was on the N3 southbound carriageway in the vicinity of Hammarsdale.

“Tragically five people have sustained fatal injuries in this crash and paramedics from several private ambulance services including KZN Emergency Medical Services, treated five patients at the scene for serious injuries before transporting them to several hospitals in Durban for continued medical care,” he said.

He said the exact circumstances resulting in the crash are going to be investigated by the police.

Meanwhile, in another incident, about 45 people who were returning from a funeral were injured after a bus overturned outside the Waterloo Sports Centre in Waterloo, north of Durban this afternoon (Sunday).

The Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) spokesman Prem Balram said their members received multiple calls from witnesses requesting assistance for the injured passengers.

He said Reaction Officers and RUSA Medics arrived on the scene at approximately 16:14 and discovered the bus lying on its side.

“The injured were freed from the wreckage with assistance from RUSA Members and the public. The injured sustained mild to moderate injuries and were transported to a local hospital by private and provincial ambulance services,” he said.

He said according to the passengers, the occupants of the bus consisted of friends and family who were returning to Waterloo from a funeral in Buffelsdraai, Verulam when the accident occurred.

Prem added that the bus driver fled the scene for unknown reasons.
