The current VW Polo is one of the most popular cars in Mzansi and the newest version, the 1,0 TSI model in the R-Line trim, joined the line-up some time ago.
SunWheels took it for a spin recently.
While the current Polo is getting replaced by an all-new range by this time next year, it is still an attractive choice.
With the R-Line package the Polo is even more of a looker thanks to snazzy design features such as eye-catching 17-inch wheels, aggressive body kit and optional LED headlights.
On the inside, the car impressed us with its high-quality fit and finish, very comfortable sports seats and all the needed comfort features such as VW’s impressive 5-inch infotainment system that streams music from smart phones.
Space for rear passengers is a bit cramped, while the boot, which is 280 litres in size, isn’t the biggest available.
The most impressive attribute of this Polo is its three-cylinder turbopetrol engine. We were pleasantly surprised by how quickly and effortlessly the 1,0-litre turbocharged unit got the Polo up to speed. The seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox changed seamlessly even under hard acceleration.
It is one of the most refined engines in the business and the Polo R-Line’s performance doesn’t disappoint.
Despite the fact that the current Polo is facing retirement next year, it is still a modern hatchback – especially in R-Line guise.
It is pricey but you do get a premium car with excellent German engineering and craftsmanship.
