Daniel Sibata loves his Beetle so much that he treats it “like my woman.”
Daniel, from Diepkloof, Soweto, told SunWheels: “This is why I won’t all allow anyone else to drive her. I don’t think they will drive her with the love and respect I have for her.
“I bid her good night every night without fail when I go to bed.”
His love for Beetles has led to people nicknaming him “The Beetle Guy”.
Q: What car is this?
A: 1970 VW Beetle 1600SP
Q: When did you buy it?
A: I bought it in 2016
Q: Do you love this car?
A: Yes.
Q: Is this your dream car?
A: Yes, she is.
Q: Would you let another person to drive her?
A: No, I am too protective about my car.
Q: Is it your first car?
A: No, this is my second car and second Beetle. Before this one, I had a black and red 1600S 1974 Beetle.
Q: Why is the boot and the bonnet rusty?
A: I wanted to give it a rugged and used look – a distressed appearance. I wanted this car to look as old as possible.
Q: Have you driven any long distances in it?
A: Yes I do drive long distances with this beauty. Two months back, I drove to Bloemfontein with the Streetwise Foundation and four months ago I drove to Harrismith.
The foundation is a small club of other Beetle’s fans that I belong to.
Q: What do you think of other drivers?
A: Most drivers are always running late for work, and when they do that, they lose focus and become a nuisance or a danger.
Q: Do traffic cops give you a problem?
A: Ha! Not really. They stop me out of curiosity sometimes. But I like the fact that they mostly stop me because they think there should be something wrong with the car.
They always discover that it’s roadworthy and I have a licence. I respect the law of the road.
