Despite being the underdog in its market, the Mitsubishi ASX is actually quite popular with buyers. The ASX might not be the sexiest or funkiest crossover, but it offers decent value.

And the good news is that the Japanese carmaker has given the ASX an upgrade.

The car scores high as a practical crossover, thanks to its 1 193 litres of storage space when its rear seats are lowered. What’s more is that all models come with a five-year/100 000km service plan and a three-year/100 000km warranty.

According to Mitsubishi, the new ASX 2,0 GL CVT version should be a popular choice since it offers good standard package of features in a truly attractive vehicle.

The stylish design includes a striking new front-end with a more prominent grill. Also added are chrome trim and other minor changes. Inside, the popular features remain unchanged except for the seat cushions that Mitsubishi said had been re-designed to offer better comfort.

There are five versions in the range but one engine option, Mitsubishi’s 2,0-litre petrol engine. This four cylinder unit is equipped with valve-timing electronic control system and a multi-point fuel injector.

Besides the six-speed CVT automatic gearbox there is also the option of a five-speed manual. Mitsubishi said that the manual models use 7,5 litres every 100km and the CVT gearbox uses 7,6 litres.

Mitsubishi also boasts that the ASX is a safe choice and this is backed up by the standard range of safety features such as ABS, electronic brake-force distribution and emergency brake assistance.

Standard items across the range are a Bluetooth connection with voice control, cruise control, a multi-function steering wheel, electric windows, air conditioning, rain-sensing wipers, rear park distance control and automatic lights.

GLX and GLS versions also offer a full-length panoramic glass roof, keyless operation, a full colour touchscreen infotainment system, heated leather seats in the front, and an electrically adjustable driver’s seat, as well as a rear-view camera.

There is also a high-tech and powerful sound system for the GLS version.
