SCARY CAR SALE STORIES

Too many online car sales have ended up as horrible crimes.
Too many online car sales have ended up as horrible crimes.

A FRIEND who was desperate to buy a car went on the internet to see what car he could buy.

There was a good looking VW Polo that was incredibly cheap, out somewhere in Mpumalanga.

After enquiring, he was told to deposit some money so that the car could be driven up to Joburg for him to see.

“I did that, but the supposed seller came up with excuses as to why he could not drive up. He then advised me to come to him.”

My friend actually drove to Mpumalanga and told the seller to meet him at a police station but he never showed up.

To cut the long story short, he never got his money back and there was no car.

This is similar to an incident in Port Elizabeth where a car viewing, arranged through a national advertising site, went wrong.

The drama – which involved a shooting and four arrests – has again shone the spotlight on the risks of high-value goods, such as cars, on online classified sites.

The risk exists for both buyers and sellers on these private classified websites.

“Sadly, incidents like these are not uncommon at all,” said Fernando Pinheiro, a managing director of CarZar.

“A lot of sellers have scary stories about selling a car online. Some have experienced attempted hijackings or money payments being reversed after the car had been transferred.”

He said that many people didn’t want to go through dealerships – even if this was a safer option – because it didn’t deliver the best deal.

“Online car buyers like CarZar are a safe and secure alternative that also allows car sellers to get a really good price for their car without any danger in terms of safety or financial fraud.”

If a car is sold, the seller gets the payment and paperwork completed on the same day. For more information visit www.carzar.co.za
