THE SLAUGHTER on our roads shows no sign of slacking. Booze, reckless driving and fatigue keep killing South African drivers.
Road Traffic Management Corporation spokesman Simon Zwane said 2 100 drivers have been bust for offences such as speeding this festive season and cops have issued 17 000 traffic fines. Drunk driving arrests total over 4 000 so far.
- JOBURG: Twelve people were injured yesterday morning after a taxi rear-ended a delivery vehicle on the N1 southbound in Rivonia, Joburg.
ER24 spokesman Russel Meiring said: “One patient was found trapped in the taxi. Authorities closed off the slow lane while rescue services used the jaws of life to free the man from the taxi.” Paramedics treated the patients and provided the seriously injured patient with advanced life support.
- EKURHULENI: Yesterday, a taxi rolled on the N12 near the Atlas turn-off in Boksburg. ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene at 5.30am and found the taxi lying on its side in the fast lane. Fourteen patients had minor injuries.
- TSHWANE: A man died after his vehicle hit a tree on the corner of Wesley Road and Stead Avenue in Queenswood, Pretoria. The man’s dog survived. Netcare 911 spokeswoman Athlenda Mathe said the man was declared dead at the scene.
- A motorcyclist is in critical condition after colliding with a train on the R104 at 8.45am yesterday 10km outside Bronkhorstpruit. A helicopter airlifted the man to a Gauteng trauma facility.
- GAUTENG: A woman was killed and three people sustained serious injuries when their vehicle overturned on the N12 near the Fochville intersection outside Carletonville yesterday.
Just after 7am, paramedics and emergency services found a VEHICLE lying on its side. Four women had been ejected from the vehicle. One, believed to be a traffic officer, was declared dead on the scene. Another was found with critical injuries and WAS airlifted to a Joburg hospital. The other two women were treated at the scene and rushed to a nearby hospital.
- MPUMALANGA: Five people died yesterday when two vehicles and a truck collided on the Schoemanskloof Road about 40km outside Nelspruit. Paramedics found the vehicle overturned with five dead bodies trapped in the wreckage.
