The local bakkie war is heating up with the launch of Mitsubishi’s all-new Triton.
It is the most advanced pick-up ever developed by Mitsubishi. It is a balanced combination of a true SUV on the road with the capabilities of a heavy-duty workhorse.
The new Triton arrives on local shores after being comprehensively re-designed while retaining those highly-rated features that made previous models extremely popular.
As before, the Triton has a radical design compared to its rivals, with a more sculpted body that has a bit of a futuristic look.
At first the Triton will only be available as a double cab with club cab and single cab models coming later.
Also, there is only one engine choice which is Mitsubishi’s new 2,4-litre DOHC MIVEC, 16-valve turbodiesel unit.
Buyers can choose to have their engine fitted with a six-speed manual or a five-speed automatic gearbox. It also comes with an option of either a 4x2 or a 4x4 drive.
Mitsubishi claims the turbodiesel engine uses an average of 7,6 litres of fuel every 100km.
The cabin itself has been stretched by 20mm to 1 745mm in length to further improve cabin space, while shoulder room – both in front and the rear – has also been improved.
All models have leather seats, with the driver’s seat being electrically adjustable for the driver, while other standard features include a touch-screen infotainment system display with reverse camera and a Bluetooth connection, dual-zone climate control and a cruise control.
For safety features, the Triton comes with dual-front airbags, ABS, active stability control and traction control systems.
