MZANSI motorists are a step closer to losing their licences, if they don't follow rules of the road.
The National Assembly passed the Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences (Aarto) amendment bill on 5 September.
These amendments pave the way for the adoption of a driver points demerit system.
According to Minister of Transport Joe Maswanganyi, the bill is aimed at discouraging road traffic contraventions and to implement a points demerit system.
Maswanganyi welcomed the Amendment Bill by the National Assembly.
"The bill is to assure South Africans that their lives matter and that it is about increasing road safety," said Maswanganyi.
The transport department says the bill is a direct result of the unsustainable road safety challenge in Mzansi".
Maswanganyi added that Mzansi has been experiencing tremendous loss of lives, especially of young people disregarding road traffic laws.
In 2014, Mzansi experienced well over 10 000 crashes and 12 000 people were injured.
Meanwhile between 2015 and 2017 over 27 000 people died on South African roads due to crashes.
"So as a country, we need to act with resolve and turnaround this unfortunate situation. We must act with conviction and take responsibility for our situation," said Maswanganyi.
