Following the recent heavy rains in parts of South Africa you should expect the roads to have a lot more potholes. And every driver knows the dreaded feeling of their wheels slamming into a hole.
The key to avoiding potholes lies in defensive driving.
According to the managing director of MasterDrive, Eugene Herbert, the principles of defensive driving which prevent you from colliding with other vehicles also helps you dodge potholes.
- Keeping a safe following distance gives you time to see and steer around a pothole.
- Slow down if you are driving in an area known for potholes. If you are going slower it is easier to evade potholes. And if you do hit one, the damage should be reduced.
- You should never drive distracted. If you are aware of what’s on the road, you’ll also be aware of potholes in the road.
- Watch other drivers so if you see a driver ahead of you swerve, slow down and get ready to steer. Watch for drivers in other lanes who may suddenly swerve into your lane to avoid a hole in theirs.
- Do not drive through puddles of water because you don’t know how deep they are.
- If you can’t avoid a pothole, try drive into it straight on and not at an angle, which can cause more damage.
