IT’S CELERIO V THE KWID

accreditation

Buying a car is one of the most expensive but often unavoidable expenses a person can make.

And though most people want to drive fancy wheels, you must be aware of what you can afford. Car prices are only getting higher.

A few years ago it would have been hard to imagine that a VW Polo would ever have a price tag of more than R200 000 – the VW Polo Vivo Maxx was R166 800 in 2013!

However, if you want a sensible car you can afford, you are still spoiled for choice. The top choices for about R130 000 are the Suzuki Celerio and Renault Kwid.

Suzuki Celerio GA – R132 900

Suzuki is gaining favour among local car buyers with its Celerio, a favourite budget hatchback. It has a unusual upright design but don’t be fooled by its tiny-seeming dimensions as it is big on interior space.

Power steering and air-conditioning are standard, while it comes with a sound system preparation kit – an antenna and dual-front speakers – but the radio or other device is extra. Its one-piece rear bench seat folds forward to boost the already generous luggage compartment.

Most importantly, the Celerio GA is safe choice too as it comes fitted with dual-front airbags and anti-lock ABS.

  • Power: 50kW@6 000r/min
  • Torque: 90Nm@3 500/rmin

Renault Kwid Dynamique – R134 900

The Renault Kwid is the newest player in its market and its SUV-inspired design encourages its popularity. The Kwid has become a familiar face on our roads since its launch a few months ago.

Car lovers will immediately see that it has some decent ground clearance which means it is well suited to tackle our poor road conditions.

It also impresses with standard kit too, which includes power steering, electric windows and air conditioning. However, a stand-out feature is its multimedia system which offers a Bluetooth connection and satellite navigation.

On the safety front, the Kwid lacks ABS brakes and dual airbags since it is only offered with a driver’s airbag. However, it does come with an impressive five-year warranty for peace of mind.

  • Engine: 1,0-litre petrol
