IF YOU feel some excitement inside you every time you see a classic car, visit Nasrec Expo Centre, south west of Joburg, this coming Sunday, 9 July.

From as early as 7am you’ll see old symbols of peace, love and simply having a good time at The Classic Car Show, which runs all day.

Nothing sounds quite like the rumble of a VW Kombi with its original engine running.

“We are expecting a huge turn-out of Kombis,” said the show’s organiser Paulo Calisto.

“Every year more and more Kombis turn out. Classic, unrestored, rat look or customised, they all rock up at Nasrec.”

What is it that makes Kombis so special? It could be the memories and dreams of the flower power era, but when people see these relics from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s they immediately have visions of slinging a sleeping bag in the back and heading out on the road for nowhere in particular, without a care in the world or idea of what you’re going to do when you arrive at a place you didn’t aim for.

Whether its a VW Kombi or Microbus – the American version – or the Campers of the UK, they are some of the most in-demand classic vehicles right now.

The most collectible Kombis today are the ones with roof windows, made that way so Europeans could see the mountains they drove past.

Entrance fee to the show is R80 for adults and R20 for children under 11 years. There will be live music and helicopter rides at R150 for a short flip.
