TO hear that a vehicle has a turbodiesel engine usually means it is expensive.

Luxury carmakers such as Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Volvo and Jaguar all woo the buyers with their popular diesel-powered models.

But, if you are a buyer with a budget, there are a few options to consider too. Turbocharging diesel engines is common as it produces higher power outputs, lower emissions and improves fuel efficiency.

Mahindra KUV100 1,2 D75 K6+

One of the most affordable turbodiesel cars is from Mahindra. Mahindra’s odd-looking KUV100 has a small 1,2-litre turbodiesel three-cylinder engine that Mahindra claims uses just 4,4 litres every 100km. The KUV100 comes with necessary comfort features too, as well as ABS with electronic brakeforce distribution, traction control and dual airbags as standard.

Ford Figo 1,5 TDCi Ambiente

Our top turbodiesel choice under R200 000 is the Ford Figo 1,5 TDCi. While the second-generation Figo has lost its value-for-money appeal, it is still a decent car with an impressive price tag. It is one of the cheapest around and its tried-and-tested 1,5-litre unit is fitted with a five-speed manual gearbox.

According to Ford, the Fogo’s average consumption figure is just 4,1 litres/100km. Furthermore, it is quite spacious – almost as roomy as a VW Polo. There are plenty of features too to make sure it gives a comfortable and safe ride.

Volkswagen Polo 1,4 TDI Trendline

Fancy a German car with a turbodiesel engine? Then you’ll have to settle for the VW Polo 1,4 TDI. What’s more is that the TDI badge is after all one of the most exclusive turbodiesel tags out there! At the heart of the diesel Polo is an eager 1,4-litre turbodiesel heart that is fitted with a five-speed manual gearbox pushing the front wheels.

VW claims it uses an average amount of 4,1 litres of fuel every 100km. Though a new Polo is due early in 2018 the current model is still quite desirable with excellent build quality.
