ALL ABOUT THAT TURBOCHARGER

accreditation

These days it is common to find cars with turbocharged engines. They help the engine to produce more power while using less fuel.

What do turbochargers do?

A turbocharger uses the force of the exhaust to create more pressure in the cylinders. This increases the amount of fuel-air mix that is injected into the cylinder before firing, which produces more power.

How do turbochargers work?

Turbochargers use “forced induction” to compress the air flowing into the engine.

The advantage is that the engine can squeeze more compressed air into a cylinder, and more air means more fuel can be added. Therefore, you get more power from each explosion in each cylinder.

Why are turbochargers popular?

Turbochargers were only used to give sports cars an extra kick, but these days even small hatchbacks have turbocharged engines. The reason for this is that a turbocharger allows a small engine to produce far more power on demand, but when the demands are low – such as cruising down the highway – smaller engines use less fuel.
