THESE Ga-Chuene women recently came together to celebrate five years of their club’s successful operation.
The members of Big Six, a women’s club, partied at Chuene Resort outside Lebowakgomo, in Limpopo were they enjoyed a braai and later the same evening, revealed a new shirt which will be part of Big Six’s uniform.
The stokvel was started by Linah Mazombuka and Margaret Maleto after they realised women wasted their money on frivolous things.
Margaret, the stokvel secretary, said: “We wanted the stokvel to lift the financial burden women are left to carry when they don’t save.
“Our monthly contributions allow us to pay for our children’s school fees, uniforms and necessary items such as groceries.
“We meet at the end of every month to contribute R1 000 to the stokvel. We also loan stokvel money to members but they must pay it back at the next meeting with interest.”
She added that when a member had her birthday, they threw a party and gave her a present worth R1 500.
“We first ask the member what she needs and buy her the exact thing. We don’t want to waste money.”
Another member, Tshidi Chuene (48), said: “I am a volunteer at Chuene Clinic so I rely on my husband’s allowance to pay the stokvel money. It saves me the money I would be paying if I had visited mashonishas.”
Tshidi also told SunStokvel that whenever she’s broke, the members got her out of her misery.
Mafiloane Lekoloane, another stokvel member, said: “Each of us has a task. I am the one responsible for organising the meetings. I make sure that we get a suitable spot with enough food and drinks for the day.”
She added that they were planning a holiday trip in December to reward themselves for another successful year – but where they would be going was still a Big Six surprise!
