SADLY, INSURANCE POLICY HAD LAPSED

accreditation

THE FACTS

STEVEN van Vollenhoven from Ladybrand, Free State said his wife died in November last year.

She had a funeral policy with Old Mutual that he did not know about.

He said the policy was being debited from her account every month.

He received a letter in May this year stating that the policy had lapsed.

He said he contacted Old Mutual and was told his daughter was the beneficiary of the policy and that she should claim.

When the daughter visited Old Mutual, she was told the policy had lapsed. Steven wrote to the SunDefender for help as at the time of his wife’s death, the policy was up to date.

WHAT I DID

I spoke to Old Mutual to request that the policy be paid out as the policy had lapsed after the policy-holder’s death.

SOLUTION

Old Mutual advised that the policy couldn’t be paid out because the deceased had not insured herself, but had taken out a policy which was meant to cover her extended family.

The policies that covered herself had lapsed in 2011.
