THE FACTS
LYDIA Malebo from Kagiso in Mogale City said her gogo had a funeral policy with Assupol. She said her mum was the only beneficiary on the policy.
Both her mum and gogo died in January this year. A consultant at Assupol told her they needed a letter of authority before a payout could be made.
But the Master of the High Court told her that the value of her gogo’s house was too high for the letter to be given.
WHAT I DID
I spoke to Scorpion Legal Protection about Lydia’s case.
SOLUTION
Scorpion said the insurance company was right to request a letter of authority to confirm if the money was going to the right person.
The Master of the High Court will also not grant a letter of authority where the estate is more than R250 000, as this is considered a complicated estate.
Lydia should get a lawyer so that a letter of executorship can be granted.
