Store investigates Siseko’s case
THE FACTS
SISEKO Khambi claims he lost his ID a few years ago and someone has been using it to open accounts. He discovered this when he tried to get a cellphone contract. The service provider told him he had an account in arrears and his name was listed at a credit bureau. He also found out that he owed Lewis Stores R19 000. He then contacted SunDefender for help.
WHAT I DID
I contacted Lewis Stores call centre manager Judy Isaacs.
SOLUTION
It was found that Siseko had indeed entered into a credit application with Lewis Stores in April 2011. He produced his ID and a payslip and a credibility check was completed, on which basis credit was granted. However, on the same day an application was being processed at another Lewis branch using the same details. That application was denied and the matter was escalated to the fraud department. It was discovered that Siseko’s payslip had been fraudulently manipulated and the store listed his ID number with the South African Fraud Prevention Services. It has also been brought to the store’s attention that in May a request was sent from a false Lewis email address stating that Siseko’s profile be updated with the Fraud Prevention Services. Lewis is investigating and intend to take legal action.
