MEMBERS of this stokvel don’t worry about mashonisas at all.

This is because their society allows them to borrow up to R5 000 from the stokvel as long as they pay back an extra R20 for every R100 they borrow.

Maphefo Radinku, chairwoman of Atlegang Stokvel, said members had to return the lent money no later than four months after they borrowed it.

“But the interest must be paid every month for three months. On the fourth month you must return the society money.”

They formed their society in Luka Village in Rustenburg but have members from as far as Phokeng and Lefaragatlha.

They meet every second Sunday after church to pay R250 each.

The money is saved to buy groceries at the end of the year.

Maphefo said that it was their lack of food at the end of the year that forced them to start a savings club.

“We started Atlegang to make sure that we wouldn’t starve during the festive season.”

With 68 members from three Rustenburg villages they are also able to make new friends every time they gather for a meeting. The members furthermore each pay R30 to help cover the funeral costs if a member dies.

Members are also invited when another member celebrates a birthday, to weddings or tombstone unveilings.
