IKATLENG Social Club lives to bring out the best in their community.

These 34 members, from Mamelodi extension 18 in Pretoria, were struggling to save money until they united in 2014 as a club.

They have no specific amount they each need to contribute, but members are advised to make sure they each contribute something every month and attend meetings.

Themba Sithole, the leader, told SunStokvel: “This club helps us to share ideas, save and make investments.”

These young men and women also discuss social issues facing the community.

“Our members help out at funerals and run business workshops; it’s where we show people how to save money and start a business.”

The members said it was important to use their skills and beat poverty.

“We work hand in hand with the community and they are supportive. We call upon other youth in the area to join us. Our mission is to see youngsters living a better and happy life.”

Another member, Tumi Mehlaphe, said he had benefited a lot from the club and his life changed for the better.

“We also spend our spare time socialising, playing soccer and doing athletics.”

Vusi Masombuka said he was proud to be part of the club as the youth from his kasi were proud of him too and promised to join their initiative.
