Saving money for rainy days seems difficult for many in Mzansi, but this is the reason why Vukuzenzele Social Club was set in motion.

Vukuzenzele started with 80 members when it was launched in 1996 but has grown to 350 members today.

Most of the members are based in and around Soshanguve, Mabopane, Atteridgeville, Mamelodi and other Tshwane kasis.

Founder and chairman, Clifford Ngomane (50), said Vukuzenzele was formed to save money during the year and then share the cash at the end.

“Saving money regularly as a community was better than struggling alone.

“We agreed on a R200 minimum contribution but members can save more if they so wish.”

He said they also pay R100 000 to a member’s family if that member dies.

“While we were satisfied with this, we also felt Vukuzenzele could spread its wings and grow into a venture.”

The members meet every Wednesday to make their contributions and pay R30 for catering.

Clifford said he has been with club for 21 years.

“I did a lot of things with the money that I am saving every year. I am used to buying things with cash. I’ve built my family a big house and bought two cars.”

One member, Sweetness Molapo, said: “I am a changed person since joining Vukuzenzele. I no longer stress during the festive season and I am no longer in debt. The club taught me to be patient and save for what I want.”
