IT IS time to start putting some cash back into your pocket.
SunMoney got Richard Mukheibir, Cash Converters’ managing director, to help you!
“Spring cleaning makes us focus on our homes, what we like about them and what we want to improve.
“It also makes you focus on just how much you own but never use or need. You can weed out items you no longer need or treasure and create more space while generating some cash.”
He said as living spaces become smaller and smaller, you need to declutter more often.
This is why you have to look for items that are in good condition but rarely used or simply wrong, unwanted or outdated, which – and make some space. These may include:
- Gifts or inherited items
- Kitchen gadgets, power tools or exercise equipment
- Jewellery and watches
- Phones, computers or cameras
- Kitchen appliances and electronic goods.
Mukheibir said if you feel separation anxiety about de-cluttering, don’t push it.
He said the easiest way is to get a big box and put it in a space you want to declutter. Every time you find something you don’t want anymore, put it in the box. After a week or even a month, check what you have collected, listing each item that is in good enough condition to sell, with its model number, and clean it if necessary.
Then do some online research to get an idea of what price each item might fetch – bear in mind most online prices include wriggle room for sellers to offer haggling buyers a discount.
“Now you are ready for the final step of trading those unwanted goods for cash. Go online or go to a pawn shop if you don’t want the hassle of haggling. Our system is convenient, quick and easy and means you avoid dealing with strangers online or struggling to have goods delivered.”
