POVERTY pushed these Mamelodi women to start a social club to benefit them all.
Katekani Magaza Sisters from Extension 12, Mamelodi East, are happy women now that they don’t sleep with empty stomachs.
Their stokvel started in 2003 with 12 members. The high unemployment rate drove them to start a social club to benefit them and their kids.
“In the club we treat each other as family. Our suffering is over,” said a spokeswoman.
Member Sibongile Mayike (48) said the club helped them to save money to send their kids to school, build houses and also to have some left for Christmas.
“We share our R750 weekly contributions every weekend. We are happy that our children now attend school with a big smile,” said Sibongile.
Their club is also part of NASSA which helps them to save and gives tips on how to invest their money.
“My money worries are gone,” said an excited Sibongile.
The women said the club also helped them discuss and tackle daily issues.
Another member, Jeannet Khoza (39), said since joining the stokvel her stress has gone.
“Each December we share our remaining contributions and each member gets R9 000.
“We are proud to be part of our stokvel,” she said.
