IT’S not only death these women talk about every month, but also how they can form relationships.
Julia Zulu from Ukuhle bamakhosikazi Women’s Society, said they loved to socialise, play loud music and share ideas. “We want to try to make life seem as normal as possible and not let our own problems take over.
“To socialise like this helps to take our minds off difficulties.
“And now we always have a shoulder to cry on.”
It is also the reason Ukuhle bamakhosikazi was formed more than two years ago in Tsakane, Ekurhuleni.
Every August when they meet, they change things a bit and don’t eat food they normally eat every month.
They buy lots of cool drinks and braai meat and celebrated Women’s Month in style.
Members also celebrate their birthdays, Mother’s Day and go on an outing every November.
“We rotate our meetings around Tsakane. The hostess of the day cooks for all of us. All we do is pay her R20 each.”
Julia said all 36 women members were committed to making a positive contribution to their lives.
“We are now a happy family. This society was started to bring us together. We realised we needed to share ideas as women and be united as neighbours.”
She said they meet every first Sunday of the month at a member’s place after church. Each person contributes R130. Of that amount R100 is for funeral savings, R20 is for food and R10 for transport.
“We go all over Mzansi to bury people, that is why we save transport money monthly.”
Women who want to be part of them are welcome to join.
