IN MANY families women have a special role to play. This group of women are doing exactly that.
They are not just responsible mothers for their own families, but go beyond that.
Lerato Women’s Club in Tsakane has been in existence for almost a quarter of a century. The biggest thing the club achieved was to build their own organisation when most women couldn’t.
Khosi Mahlangu, a co-founder, told SunStokvel: “I am just one of a few people who started this club back in 1993 with other 19 women.
“The reason why we ended up coming together was simply because we needed each other all the time.”
Today they are all happy despite the challenges they had.
The club has grown to 25 members after starting with 20 women with the aim to help bury their loved ones.
They meet on a rotation basis at members’ homes to discuss issues of their organisation.
Everyone is expected to make her contribution which goes into their savings account.
Khosi said: “We each contribute our money at our monthly meetings. When we started, the contribution was only R60 per member.
“However, things are different today and our contributions are now R200 per member.
“The host prepares the meals, but need R20 from each of us to do that,” said Mahlangu.
If a member dies, Lerato contributes R10 000 towards the funeral. In case it is a family member of one of the club’s members, they contribute R6 000.
