FAITH Mawoko from Soshanguve has never had a formal job.
However, with the little cash she generates from piece jobs she not only buys food, but also contributes R50 every week to Girl Friends, a social club she belongs to.
“I know how painful it is to survive without a regular job, but then again I could not allow such a challenge to stand in my way.
“Therefore, when the idea of a social club were discussed, I was one of the people who were interested and two weeks later we met again and agreed to the name Girl Friends.
“I do not regret being a member, in fact, if it wasn’t for the club, maybe I would not have managed to buy the items that I needed such as furniture,” said Faith.
Girl Friends social club is 11 years old but it is no longer only for women because they also decided to allow men to join.
Meetings are held every week on Sundays at different venues around the township, and since starting their membership has grown to 26 people.
At the meetings, members are expected to contribute a minimum of R100 each which is deposited into the club account.
If a member should use strong language during a meeting, he or she is fined R150 while latecomers are expected to pay R10. Members who commit misconduct are fined R100.
Faith said: “Since I joined this club I have learned to buy only what I need and save the rest of the money for our club.
“Before I joined the club it was not easy for me to save cash but today I do not only save money but I also only buy what I need as a woman.”
