BOEREWORS is one of the most celebrated and loved South African foods.
There are numerous flavours and kinds of boerewors to tempt the taste buds, but all of them must contain at least 90% meat, always beef but may also may contain lamb, pork or a lamb-pork mix.
The other 10% is made up of spices and other ingredients. No more than 30% of the meat content may be fat.
Boerewors may not contain any “mechanically recovered” meat – the process in which meat and bone are mechanically separated.
The biggest event where the boerewors is highlighted is at the annual recipe competition called Championship Boerewors!
This competition has been running for the past 10 years with Shoprite, Checkers and Checkers Hyper stores.
To give things a bit of a twist, the stores are celebrating the best recipe of the past decade.
Judging – from SA Chef’s Association – are Thuli Gogela, Martin Kobald, Jenny Morris and Carmen Niehaus. They have selected their top three Championship Boerewors recipes from the past 10 years.
It is now up to the public to have the last say by voting for the best of the best.
* The Championship Boerewors recipes of Jaco Labuschagne, the youngest ever winner of this competition, from Boksburg, Gauteng, in 2010; Jasper Gordon from Strand, Western Cape, in 2011; and Koos van Dyk from Polokwane, Limpopo, in 2014, will compete to be the ultimate boerewors champion!
* The top three favourites as selected by the judges will be available as a limited edition 3-in-1 pack in all Mzansi Shoprite, Checkers and Checkers Hyper stores from now until 12 April.
* People are asked to buy, braai, try and vote for their favourite recipe by following the on-pack instructions. In doing so, they stand a chance to win their share of R50 000 in shopping vouchers!
