SPECIAL DAY FOR GOGOS AND MKHULUS

accreditation

OUR grandparents play an important role in our lives and always take care of us when our parents are away.

On Sunday, 8 October, Mzansi’s OUMA Rusks will celebrate our gogos, grannies, nanas, oupas, oumas, grandads and mkhulus in style.

This proudly South African brand was created by Ouma Greyvensteyn in 1939 during the great depression in the small northern Eastern Cape town of Molteno.

The legend says Ouma started by baking a batch of rusks using her family’s trusted traditional buttermilk recipe.

After selling these delicious treats to the locals, orders soon poured in and the loved South African brand was born.

They were first sold under the name Outspan Rusks but was soon changed to Ouma.

In 1941, government’s new Industrial Development Corporation gave its first start-up loan of £1 500 to Ouma Rusks – which is worth over R2 million today.

OUMA brand manager Lonwabo Thinta said the day was a call for all South Africans to recognise and pay tribute to the role our own grandparents play in our lives, by setting aside our time to spend it with someone who gave up so much for us.

“This act of appreciation can be as simple as the special moment of enjoying a rusk with those who helped shape us into the people we are today.”
