World Milk Day was started in 2001 by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations and is celebrated internationally on 1 June annually.
Each year, Woodlands Dairy, one of the largest manufacturers of UHT milk in South Africa, marketed under the brand FIRST CHOICE® join in the celebration by visiting schools around the country to educate kids about the benefits and nutritional values of milk in a fun way.
The benefits of milk, such as good bone health, prevention of illness such as osteoporosis, a strong immune system and reducing incidence of tooth decay, are explained to the children. Learners enjoy a short, fun educational lecture on the “journey of milk” from milking the cow on the farm, to the consumer’s home.
Milky Moo, the First Choice mascot, is responsible for the many happy smiles when the kids get milk he helps hand out.
MILK IS GOOD FOR YOUR WHOLE BODY
HERE are some benefits of milk:
Beautiful skin
Milk helps to keep your skin supple, soft, and glowing. It has many vitamins and nutrients that are essential to skin health.
Strong teeth
Milk is the best source for calcium, and that’s exactly what your teeth need. Milk helps prevent cavities and tooth decay.
Healthy bones
It’s true that kids need to drink milk to increase bone health in order to improve proper growth. Adults can benefit from drinking milk to help keep their bones strong, which will reduce the risk of developing osteoporosis.
Muscle growth
It is also great at improving muscle growth thanks to the protein in it. Many athletes drink milk after a workout as it gives the body essential nutrients needed to recover. It also helps to prevent sore muscles.
Rehydration
Milk has a good amount of water molecules so it helps keep us hydrated. Especially for kids who are constantly active it is important to stay hydrated. Athletes drink it to replenish fluids they lost during physical activity.
Helps you sleep
A warm glass of milk helps to relieve muscle tension and soothe your nerves. Warm milk can also help you sleep better.
Heartburn eliminator
The cooling sensation and the thick consistency of milk helps to coat the oesophagus and stomach lining.
