The Add Hope campaign has been able to help about 137 NGOs all over South Africa.
Because of the Hope against Hunger Challenge for World Hunger Day, Add Hope was able to collect over R4,8 million in May. This means they will be able to feed more than 120 000 children using feeding schemes at partner organisations.
Thabisa Mkhwanazi, the public affairs director of KFC Africa, said: “We are so happy that we exceeded our targets and we thank you, South Africa, for every donation.
“They all add up to helping children to learn, grow and thrive. World Hunger Day lets us focus on the hunger-related issues we have in South Africa and it lets people know that they can really make a difference.
“The success of the challenge shows that if we all pull together, our contributions add up to a major impact.”
This World Hunger Day, on 28 May, Add Hope shared videos filmed at NGOs, online and at restaurants, to inspire South Africans to join the challenge.
The Hope Squad, a group of young people whose own lives have been changed by Add Hope, visited KFC restaurants. They showed customers virtual reality videos made at some of the Add Hope partners such as JAM, Boys and Girls Clubs of South Africa, and Africa Food for Thought.
Tebogo Mabye, a Hope Squad member, found a safe haven at MES when growing up in Hillbrow. Tebogo now works for MES as a co-ordinator of the youth enrichment programme.
“It’s been a privilege to be part of Hope Squad and see how people respond to watching the children they help. I am evidence of the benefits eating secure meals every school day gives to young bodies and minds – it can turn lives around. I want to share this with people and challenge them to do more.”
