SOUTH African Breweries (SAB) has, for the first time, launched an eight-pack of beers from different African countries in a plan to export the beers to the world.
As part of this initiative, SAB has partnered with Stop Hunger Now SA – an international NGO which packs and distributes meals to people living in poverty.
For every eight-pack of African beers sold, three Mzansi students will get a nutritious meal.
“Our goal is to provide 1 million meals for students by next year and every year after that,” said Ricardo Tadeu, zone president of Africa for Anheuser-Busch InBev.
“But beyond that, we also support agricultural development in the different countries as each country’s beer uses key ingredients grown by its farmers.”
Saira Khan, CEO of Stop Hunger, said malnutrition and hunger kills more people annually than HIV/Aids, malaria and TB combined. “In South Africa alone, 3,165 million children suffer from hunger and malnutrition.”
“A pilot study within universities revealed that an alarming 40% of students failed due to hunger.
“Initiatives such as Beers for Africa, which pledge to support students, really do allow them to earn an education and thus move out of poverty.”
The first Beers for Africa pack showcases our local Castle Lager, St Louis (Botswana), Maluti Premium Lager (Lesotho), 2M (Mozambique), Laurentina Preta (Mozambique), Manica (Mozambique), Kilimanjaro Premium Lager (Tanzania) and Zambezi Premium Lager (Zimbabwe).
