FOR the first time, many new students will be living alone at FET colleges or varsity where they will study.

It might seem simple to find a place and move in, but if you ask Deli Skhosana from Mpumalanga, who just moved into a new residence, next to UJ, it was a tough experience.

“You see a place advertised and it sounds appetising, but until you move in, you won’t realise that it isn’t what you expected – that it’s not a friendly place where you want live.”

SunEducation spoke to Craig McMurray, CEO of Respublica, one of the country’s top providers of student accommodation, about students and parents looking for accommodation.

“Your living area plays a large role in success in your life. This is where you learn to take responsibility for yourself, learn to manage your time, relationships and study commitments without the supervision of your parents,” he said.

All above board: Universities and FET colleges usually do recommend independent residence operators who offer suitable accommodation.

When speaking to a student accommodation landlord, check that they are recommended by your institution.

Safety and security: Check that the facility that you’re considering has suitable security, both to protect the student’s belongings, and to protect their person too.

Pricing v value: Shop around for the best deal to make sure you have considered all the potential costs involved.

Keep it close: Accommodation should be located close to campus or close to public transport for easy access to classes.

Comfort: It’s the creature comforts that make it easier to stay in and study. Where you choose to stay should include the basics such as beds, built in cupboards, lockers for valuables, fridges, and a desk, all of which should be in good repair.

Socialising: Make sure that your chosen facility has common areas where students can relax and socialise in a safe environment.

Health: A place that offers a gym or other exercise options is something to keep in mind too.

Technology: Internet access has gone from a luxury to a critical necessity. Find out what sort of connectivity is offered.
