NONDUMISO Mdletshe, a scientist in the making, is set to fly the KZN flag high.
The 18-year-old from Esikhaleni outside Empangeni, northern KZN, is one of the young science pupils who will be representing KZN in the Eskom Expo competition at national level this month.
The grade 12 pupil from Khula High School in Esikhaleni won in the Eskom Expo competition when it was held at the University of Zululand in last month.
This qualified her to compete at national level which will be held next month.
Nondumiso told SunEducation her favourite subjects are physical science, life science, geography and mathematics.
She said that her love for science made it easier for her to win the provincial Eskom expo science quiz competition.
“I found the quiz easy because of the passion I have for science.
“I spend most of my time reading science books – even ones that are not part of the syllabus.”
She said science gave her exactly what she wanted because she wanted to learn something new every day.
“I started loving science when I was in grade 8 and natural science sparked the love I now have.
“We used to go to the laboratory and do experiments and what happened during the experiments amazed me and fed my passion.
“When I finish school I want to pursue a career in mathematics.
“But I still have to decide between actuarial mathematics, applied mathematics and biomathematics.
“I have applied for all the courses at different institutions.
“My dream is to have my own laboratory where I can do experiment and host school workshops for schools in rural areas where laboratories are scarce.”
