IT IS World Literacy Month!

Montecasino and Skoobs Theatre of Books are asking for books.

The Monte Book Drive aims to donate 1 000 collected books to schools in and around Diepsloot to encourage children to read and fall in love with books.

Lisa Sukdev, public relations manager at Montecasino, said people can drop off one or more books at the Skoobs store or at Montecasino staff canteens from today until the end of the month.

“Literacy is the bridge from misery to hope. It is the vehicle that carries people out of poverty. We need to do everything possible to make sure children are literate and love reading.”

She said the reading of books is like a conversation with some of the finest minds who ever lived.

General manager of the casino, Mike Page, said the aim of the book donation was to improve literacy in townships.

“It’s a reality that many Mzansi schools do not have well-stocked, functional libraries.

“The books will hopefully boost four Diepsloot schools and foster a love of literacy among local children.”

Mike said they were primarily focused on boosting education at schools in the Diepsloot area, which is 10km from the precinct and home to many staff members.
