Opportunities that were inconceivable in the past are now available for the benefit of all, but the key to future success for today’s people lies in education.

When Nelson Mandela said “Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world”, he referred to the liberation that education provides to social challenges that we face daily.

This was the clear message to stunned commuters at Madibeng bus rank when their usual spot was occupied by career advisers from the department of higher education and training.

Career development services from the department conducted a Career Development Services Blitz Awareness campaign in Madibeng, the North West, last month.

Free career services were offered to the public through multiple channels including a walk-in centre, social media, phone and email. Users of the service may send an SMS to 072 204 5056 or call 086 999 0123. Advisers are on standby throughout the week to give information and counsel the public.

The career blitz, which started at Botlhabelo Secondary School in Brits, reached more than 2 500 people directly and more through Madibeng FM radio.

Young people were encouraged to further their studies, apply for financial assistance and study subjects for high-demand occupations to increase their chances of finding employment and contributing towards the economy of our country.

It was through the career development blitz that the education department reminded the community that:

- Career development is a lifelong journey.

- Each of us needs to take charge and be pro-active in building of our careers.

- Funding opportunities are available.

- A variety of options are available.

As part of the blitz, the following activities took place: a motivational career talk and a career information session for 400 grade 9 to 12 high school pupils at Botlhabelo Secondary School, and 600 national certificate vocational TVET college students. In addition to addressing youth, training of personnel for student support services, as part of career development services, also took place.
