MORE than 50% of this education centre’s girls passed matric with maths and physical science distinctions.
Schoolgirls at Karabo Centre for Mathematics, Science and Commerce, proved that girls are capable of achieving more than the boys.
The centre is a non-profit education organisation based at Vosloorus Comprehensive School, Ekurhuleni.
Speaking to SunEducation, chairman Collin Forka said: “We are proud the matric girls achieved more distinctions than the boys.
“We are sending a message that South African women can do as well or better than its men if given the opportunity.”
“We would like to thank all our sponsors, which include Joy Global Foundation, BEE Trust, VH Fibre Optic, Kagosan Foundation, Rite Metals, Rand Water Foundation and Rand Merchant Bank for the confidence they have on us.
“We are proving to them that they are putting resources to good use,” said Forka.
But he also appealed for more sponsorship so the centre could sustain the education programme.
“We are suffering a serious challenge with funds and resources. Our enrolment increases annually and is affecting our resources and funds so we’re appealing for more sponsorship.”
In total, the centre had 100 students who wrote matric last year; 76 from the Vosloorus branch and 24 at the Thokoza branch, but all of the centres obtained a 100% matric pass rate.
At the Vosloorus branch, out of the 76 pupils who wrote matric last year, 30 obtained distinctions in maths and 31 earned distinctions in physical science.
