ART has been part of the Mzansi curriculum, but many schools don’t have it as a subject.
But thanks to Cashbuild, dedicated artists from eight schools who took part in the Art-at-Heart competition won a voucher for building materials valued at R15 000 for their schools.
Ayanda Pre-school, Phumula Gardens Secondary School and Delville Primary, all from the Roodekop area in Germiston, were three of the eight winning schools.
The competition required pupils to submit their best artwork to Cashbuild.
The winning pupils received Art-at-Heart gold, silver and bronze certificates for first, second and third place.
Ayanda Pre-school’s principal, Pindi Sishane, said: “We are happy to be a beneficiary. This voucher came at the perfect time as we are extending the pre-school into a primary school. We need roofing material, bags of cement, windows as well as new doors.”
Mathabo Sekutu, head of department for Phumula Gardens Secondary School, said: “We need a drill, door handles and some paint to repair some parts of the school.”
Adriaan Fourie, principal of Delville Primary, said: “I’ll visit the store so I can check what the school needs for its maintenance.”
The Manager’s Choice award was also presented to the overall winner, Ofentse Selepe, from Leondale Primary.
The pupil won a stationery pack and the school, a glass trophy.
