XIBELANI dance runs in the blood of these energetic young girls!
When they perform and shake their waists, the xibelani garment turns like its fitted with batteries. And those who get a chance to watch them can’t help themselves but keep asking for more.
The young entertainers are aged 9-13 and they are in Grades 5 and 6 at Joas Mphahlela Primary. The little girls are from Makuleke Village, outside Malamulele.
The group gets invited to perform on Heritage Day and at farewell functions in various schools around Limpopo.
Tsakani Chauke (13) is one of the dancers.
She said: “We were born with a natural love for xibelani dance. When we get invited to perform in school functions people go crazy as they love what we do.”
Tsakani told the People’s Paper they perform free of charge.
She added: “From next year we’ll charge for performances at weddings and birthday parties. The reason we plan to charge is because we need pocket money.
“Remember, we’re from poor families and it’s important to get something for our hard work.”
Group teacher, Khensani Makhubele, said group members are dedicated.
Khensani told the People’s Paper: “The dance group is the best thing to have happened in our school. The formation of the group is part of preserving our culture through the pupils.”
Selinah Ndlovu( 12) is another group member, she said: “We’re adding our own brand of excitement to the community by doing xibelani dance. It’s part of celebrating our heritage the best way we can. Our dream is to continue with the group even when we go to high school and university.”
